Work Life Balance: Myth or Magic
I was recently talking with a client about work life balance and what that means, what is enough money to stop working so hard and just enjoy the success. We agreed but disagreed, the topic came from a friend of his whom had made big money in business yet had no plans to stop. I agreed with the friend, my client laughed. I asked him if he thought I had work life balance as he’s been with me for my 15 years in Vegas, he said .... “No, I think you probably work too much.” (lol) He went on to say that his friend said that he was more important at work than at home. He enjoys his work, he enjoys growing the businesses, solving problems, leading and inspiring the team, they need him. This may sound sad, but it isn’t, he has a great home life family. I’ve had similar talks with statistically successful, able to retire, people. None of them plan to retire anytime soon, on the contrary, most are taking risks and building bigger, more, expanding.
“What else would we do, the goal is to turn your hobbies into work, to work towards the life you want to live. To adapt and evolve, to have fun doing it, and do it with your friends in your favorite places.”
Work is our passion, our hobby, our purpose.
I enjoy doing what I do because I am wanted and needed there. By my clients, by my team, hopefully by the future of this industry. With clients we have lifelong “projects” we get to keep recreating, keep growing, progressing, we get to have a goal, work to achieve it, see the outcome and then see how it continues to progress into the next. We get to see life evolve.. We get to see first dates and marriages, babies born, kids grow up and become people and clients of their own. Generations of connection, I love the circles of clients, the families, the friends, the 7 degrees of separation and connection. It's not really about the money, yes we like it, we want it, and we use it as a means of measuring growth. I am here for it, I teach all about it, “do what you love, love what you do, and make money doing it !!” But in reality, it’s not about the money it’s about the life you want to live and enjoying it and sharing it.
Abundance. Living an abundant life truly means you are humble and grateful for what you have and give back freely, knowing more will come your way. “Acknowledging the good that you already have in your life is the foundation for all Abundance.”
I loved being in the hospitality industry, serving, bartending, owning restaurants; because of the hosting people, feeding people, giving them a place to commune, to share and to recharge. The salon is this same environment and feel with an even more “regular” clientele.
I am a Virgo through and through, intuitive and empathetic, a people pleaser, perfectionist, gift giver, problem solver, and unsolicited advice giver. I love coffee, wine, and tequila. Travel, the beach, a fire, and music always (it’s so loud in my head without it) and swings and bubbles always make me smile.
I’ve been working on a state of balance forever. Work life balance. I recently realized it’s not the goal to balance them they are one in the same. To say they need to balance is to say they are separate, my work is my life, my life is lived and fulfilled thorough my work. Work is what makes life possible, so why not make it enjoyable too. I think people who are trying to balance are doing so because they don’t love what they do. I don’t vacation as much as I do to escape from my work, I do it to reflect, to make me better at my work, to do other “work” (yes I also do it for the break from the day to day, to not get burned out, to keep from saying no, when you ask for the last minute extra that I don’t have room for). My newest tattoo is the sun and the moon. A client asked what it represented. I said balance, you can’t be all one without the other, masculine and feminine, light and dark, good and bad, work and rest, etc. The push and pull, the tides of the ocean, pulled by the moon and the heat of the sun on the earth, creating life.
“Success doesn't just come and find you, you have to go out and get it."
